Thyroid Cancer

Introduction

Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is a kind of cancer that begins in your thyroid gland. It starts when the cells grow out of control in the thyroid gland. It affects the thyroid gland which, essentially, releases the hormones that regulate the heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure and metabolism. It is the shape of a butterfly.

The affected individuals may notice the following issues:

Throat pain
Neck pain
Difficulty in swallowing
Lump in the neck
Hoarseness and voice changes
Types of Thyroid Cancer:
Follicular Thyroid Cancer
This type of thyroid cancer develops from the follicular cells of the thyroid and can quickly spread to the lymph nodes. It has a high possibility of spreading into the blood vessels.
Medullary Thyroid Cancer
Since it produces a hormone called calcitonin, medullary cancer can be detected in the earlier stage. Doctors keenly look out for the hormone calcitonin during blood tests. It is makes up to 4% of the overall thyroid cancers.
Papillary Thyroid Cancer
Those with thyroid cancer likely have papillary thyroid cancer since it is noticed in roughly about 80% of overall thyroid cancers. This problem tends to develop slowly but spreads often to your lymph nodes. With good treatment the affected individuals have an opportunity for complete recovery.
Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer
Anaplastic thyroid cancer is of a severe type because it is highly aggressive and quickly spreads to remaining parts of your body. This problem is not only rare but also difficult to treat. It occurs in adults over 60 years of age.
